My family always put a large influence on school. It was never a question whether i would go to college or not because it was just a piece of my plan. My family growing up was very supportive in my schooling. They would check my homework every night and proofread all of my papers to make sure i was writing at my best potential they would help me with my creative assignments even going as far as buying me a pet guinea pig for a science fair project.
I have also had a love for animals and my strong ability of being a hands on learner only made my connection and want to work with animals in the future stronger. I got my first job working with animals in 8th grade. I was a junior zookeeper at the Roger Williams Park Zoo and was working teaching kids that came in on school trips about the animals at the zoo. I also worked directly with the animals which was such an enriching experience as a fourteen year old. Then once i got my license i got a real job at a Pet store which only expanded my resume for college. I made a point to sign up for the AP Biology and took the Advanced Marine Biology course my Senior year of high school. I also got an internship at Mystic Aquarium teaching the public about the animals that were there and small facts about each animal. My family was also supportive and were willing to help me to expand my knowledge and hobbies to prepare me for what i thought was going to help me in the future. They even went as far as helping me get my Scuba certification so that I can see these animals in real form.
You can imagine the shock from my parents when a year and a half into college i told them I was switching my major. After taking the courses my love for animals was there but i didnt want to make it my life I enjoyed it better as a leisure. I finally made the connection that one of the things i enjoyed about all of those jobs was teaching the kids or public about what I knew. Making my switch to teaching an easy one and here I am four years later and very glad i made the switch.
